If I were a 12-year-old boy again, I might have enjoyed aspects of this film. If there were no humans left on earth, why would creatures have evolved to kill them? That's what the general tells his son, which is a bit like what the man told his son in the advertisement about why they built the Great Wall of China. Evolution has sped up, so that Earth is now populated by creatures that have evolved simply "to kill humans". Of course, the planet is Earth, but not as we know it. He looks plenty frightened, but not much of anything else. Thus, the script hands the movie to the kid, but Jaden Smith has limited resources for such a role. Smith's trademark looseness gets tied down, as is his whole body, stymied here by an unpleasant fact in the story. He is capable of a strong dramatic performance, as in The Pursuit of Happyness, but this guy is a stuffed shirt. Will Smith plays General Cypher Raige, a legend among Rangers for his ability to kill the computer-generated blob-monster Ursas, but Smith is not quite cut out for such a stern-faced military-to-his-bootstraps role. Night Shyamalan, with good writers shaping and polishing – including Stephen Gaghan and Mark Boal, both uncredited – the film is misbegotten, largely because of the casting. Even though it was Will Smith's original idea, built for him by respected director M. The bigger question, the only question, is whether father and son are any good in the movie. What's the fuss if Smith senior wants to promote his 14-year-old son's career? Most of them have appeared before the cameras together at some time. Hollywood has always had dynasties: the Sheens, the Bridges, the Carradines, the Fondas. Nor is Smith the first proud father to cast his son in a movie. A lot of his movies, even the horrible ones, have hit number one.
